What is Meatless Monday?

We are so glad you asked!

Meatless Monday is a global health and environmental initiative launched in 2003 by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and The Monday Campaigns to invite participants to eat plant-based meals every Monday.

As UUs, we live our 7th Principle which reminds us of the need to have “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.” Practicing Meatless Mondays gives each one of us an opportunity to consider what is on our plates and how a slight adjustment, one day a week, can make a significant contribution to saving our beloved planet.

Why Meatless Monday?

The United Nations recently issued a report on climate change that clearly indicates the gravity of the deteriorating climate conditions around the world, pointing to an increase in human-caused greenhouse gases as the primary cause for the current climate conditions and calling for immediate action.

We are all responsible to personally do what we can to mitigate these circumstances by altering our personal habits for the benefit of our health and the health of our planet

Save the Planet

Animal agriculture is a primary contributor to urgent environmental issues, including land and water pollution, deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions. Scientists have reported that meat eaters have been found to produce twice the greenhouse gas emissions as non-meat eaters.

Reducing consumption of meat can help in the reduction of greenhouse gases and lessen the demand for environmental resources such as land, water, and energy.

Improve Your Health

Eating a plant-focused has been proven to lower the risk of many chronic diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure,  kidney diseaseheart disease,  cancer, and chronic musculoskeletal pain. A plant-based diet can also make it easier to maintain a healthy weight

Protect and Save the Lives of Animals

Worldwide, animal agriculture results in the slaughter of 72 billion land animals and between one and three trillion fish and other aquatic animals. In the United States alone, about 10 billion land animals are raised for food each year.

The bulk of animals slaughtered for food are raised in "factory farms", where animals suffer extreme confinement and large scale abuse.
